Android smartphones have long conquered the field of smartphone photography. We’ve seen legacy partnerships between the firms, dozens of innovations, and new hardware changes. The tech industry never stays still, and now, it seems to be heading towards another interesting shift. Various Android device manufacturers are exploring ways to use an external camera lens on their devices.

In recent times, we have seen several brands opting for new hardware in their cameras. Xiaomi and Vivo are the two Android manufacturers that are already providing dedicated camera lenses for their Ultra flagships. The lens not only improves the overall smartphone photography but also changes the way we use and perceive mobile imaging.

But as we move forward, more and more Chinese smartphone makers are working on their own ways to improve mobile photography. Industry insiders, Digital Chat Station, and Smart Pikachu have independently reported that several Android manufacturers are exploring ways to use external plug-in camera lenses for their devices.

It could change the way we perceive smartphone photography

Modern Android devices have started getting as many as four or even five different camera lenses. The underlying idea behind using the external camera lenses on Android is practical: instead of crowding the device with multiple sensors that increase costs and complexity, external modules could offer more versatility.

Digital Chat Station adds that some manufacturers might just reduce the number of native cameras to one or two. Such devices will rely on advanced external lenses for zoom and macro capabilities. But Smart Pikachu, on the other hand, says that we will still get a triple rear camera setup on upcoming devices. And that the external lens support would be complementary.

Innovation and competition are the keys to any market. And thankfully, the consumers have always benefited from it. We are more than interested to see how the new trend shift will affect the smartphone consumer space.
