Unlike its competitors like Apple and Microsoft, Google has typically tried to position itself as a “fun” company. This is why, during the early days of Android, Google actually had a lawn filled with various statues. These statues were designed around the different versions of its platform. Now, it looks like Google is bringing it back with a new Android 16 statue.
Google shows off new Android 16 statue
In a post on X, Sameer Samat, Google’s President of the Android ecosystem, shared several photos of himself and the new Android 16 statue. According to Samat, “We have a new statue for each Android release to celebrate the team. This year we crowdsourced the design from the team using Gemini to help illustrate the ideas. This one is fun, interactive (it’s a carrossel!) and material 3 expressive themed.”
As you can see in the photos below, it does look like Google themed its new statue around its Material 3 Expressive design. For those unfamiliar, Material 3 Expressive is an evolution of Google’s Material You, which was introduced with Android 12. It features more rounded corners and offers a more organic-like experience.
You can tell that this new statue represents that with its rounded features, including the little carousel it is sitting on.
Google’s history with statues
In a way, it’s nice to see Google bringing back a more playful side of itself. The company first introduced the concept of Android statues in 2009. Back then, Google used to name the different versions of Android after various desserts. However, Google kind of stopped after Android 9.0 Pie.
While Google still refers to them as desserts in their codenames, they aren’t used officially. Those statues would also be created to look like the desserts. That being said, Google stopped making these statues in 2019 with Android 10. In 2022, they removed them from public view.
Back then, Google said they were being repaired and restored before being shifted to their new home at the Mountain View campus. Last year, Google took the wraps off its new Android 15 statue. It was a cute design of the Android mascot sitting on a bench. In any case, what do you think of the new Android 16 statue?
