Android May Soon Get an iOS-Inspired Volume Slider Redesign

Material 3 Expressive redesign introduced a bold new look to Android, with changes to the status bar, Quick Settings, lock screen, and notifications. Additionally, there are various minor tweaks to other parts of the UI, including some subtle changes to the volume slider. The bar is now less rounded, and there’s a slight bounce effect when the volume hits the top or bottom. However, it appears that the changes don’t stop here, as Android Authority has spotted that Google is working on a new Android volume slider layout, which resembles iOS.

Android might soon adopt an iOS-like volume slider

In the latest Android 16 QPR1 release, the volume slider is present vertically along the middle of the right edge. This is a comfortable placement when holding the smartphone in portrait orientation, as it’s easy to reach. However, in a landscape, the vertical slider layout can cover elements in a video or game. This isn’t an ideal placement as it blocks the visuals.

For comparison, iOS’ volume slider adapts to the phone’s orientation. In portrait mode, the slider is vertical, although on the left side of the screen. In landscape mode, the slider changes position to the top-center of the screen for easy reachability.

The new layout may not be used on all devices

Google appears to be under the impression that the horizontal design makes sense. Android Authority, while checking out the latest Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 release, has discovered a new layout file in Android’s SystemUI app named “volume_dialog_horizontal.” However, this layout is currently unused, and the slider doesn’t appear anywhere.

Much like on iOS, the horizontal slider is present at the top-center of the screen. However, it will continue to have several key options, including an icon for the current sound mode, a three-dot menu button, and the main volume slider. There will be a separate section with an additional slider. This will appear above the main one when there are multiple active volume streams.

As things stand, it’s not clear when Google will introduce the new horizontal volume slider. There are chances it may not arrive on large ones like tablets, where reaching the top of the screen is not quite easy. For now, this new layout could be a work in progress or an internal experiment.
