After much fanfare, Apple finally introduced the iPhone 17 series at its “Awe Dropping” event a few hours ago. The brand took the curtains off as many as four new devices this year: the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. Apple has provided a handful of upgrades in various departments on the new iPhones. However, when it comes to transfer speeds, Apple has limited the higher USB 3.0 transfer speeds on the Pro models, as the iPhone 17 and Air variants still offer slower USB 2.0 speeds.
The iPhone 17 and Air variants only support USB 2.0 transfer speeds
Both the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone Air come with USB Type-C ports. However, the connection on these two iPhone 17 models only supports USB 2.0 transfer speeds, as per the company’s product specs sheet.
Thus, users of these iPhones will have to settle for data transfer speeds that max out at 480Mbps with a USB Type-C cable. For those unaware, Apple started offering USB Type-C connections with the iPhone 15 series.
While Apple has increased the base storage of each iPhone model to 256GB storage capacity, it hasn’t upgraded the USB transfer speeds. This will particularly disappoint the iPhone Air owners, as it starts at $999.
Looking for faster transfer rates? You’ll have to buy one of the Pro models
Those looking for faster data transfer rates will have to purchase either the iPhone 17 Pro or the iPhone 17 Pro Max model, which start at $1,099. The USB Type-C port on these devices supports the much faster USB 3.0 speeds. These phones can reach 10Gb/s or 10 gigabits per second. In short, the non-Pro iPhones have not advanced from the outdated Lightning port’s highest data transfer speeds.
It’s worth mentioning that to get such a high data transfer speed of 10Gbps on the Pro models, you’ll have to buy a Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable separately. The bundled USB-C cable inside the box appears to only support USB 2 transfer rates.
